Nurse Coco

Welcome to NurseCoco.com! This website is for friends, patients, nurses, nursing students and nurse wannabes, and anyone looking for nursing-related information.

I am a Registered Nurse and Family Nurse Practitioner. I have a Master's Degree of Science in Nursing and I am nationally certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. I work in a gynecology and obstetric (OB/GYN) private practice in San Francisco, and I specialize in family planning and gynecology.

Have a question about your birth control method? Wondering when and if you should take the "morning-after pill"? Interested in going to nursing school? Ask me a question! I will post your questions anonymously and give answers on my blog.

What is a Nurse Practitioner?

A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse (RN) with additional education and clinical training. The entry-level educational preparation for nurse practitioners is a Master of Science in Nursing. NPs are one type of Advanced Practice Nurse; other advanced practice nurses include nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and clinical nurse specialists.

Nurse practitioners can perform many of the duties traditionally performed by physicians, including performing physical examinations, prescribing medications, ordering lab tests,  and performing some surgical procedures. NPs are especially valuable in rural locations and working in under-served populations who might otherwise have little access to health care. A NP can specialize in an area of expertise such as neonatal, pediatric, women's health, family, adult, or geriatrics. While there are limitless job possibilities for nurses, nurse practitioners generally work in an outpatient setting (ie clinics, doctors' offices), whereas registered nurses (RNs) often work in an inpatient setting (ie hospitals, nursing homes).

About Me

I've been a nurse since 2005 but it feels like forever! I love being a nurse practitioner- I really enjoy my job. In a typical day, I perform gynecological and prenatal examinations, diagnose illness and make treatment plans, perform microscopy
, prescribe medication, order and interpret labs and diagnostic tests, triage patients over the phone, among other duties. Cool, right? I am very busy at work but it's great to be constantly learning. I also work as a health educator teaching expectant parents on how to have a healthy pregnancy and how to care for their newborn baby. I have always wanted to be a nurse, and I truly have my dream job. Nursing is such a wonderful career because it affords so many opportunities to pursue one's dreams. Outside of nursing, I like traveling, food and wine tasting, and I am a member of the Junior League.
